  8.  AB    OBJECTIVE: The present research describes the ideology and strategy of
  9.        holistic AIDS activists. METHODS: The research was conducted on the
  10.        Alternative and Holistic Treatment Committee members of the New York
  11.        City-based activist group AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power or ACT UP. A
  12.        survey was conducted on a non-probability sample to delineate the
  13.        socioeconomic profile of the members. Semi-structured interviews spell
  14.        out the activists' ideology. Finally, a three-year ethnographic study
  15.        reveals their tactics and strategies. RESULTS: Holistic activists are
  16.        middle class with a high level of education. They argue that only a
  17.        holistic approach, which takes into account psychological, sociological
  18.        and cultural factors, can comprehend and resolve the complexities of a
  19.        condition such as AIDS. They construe AIDS as a disease of the immune
  20.        system which must be healed by using natural substances such as herbs,
  21.        immune-enhancing diets, as well as by reconstructing an environment free
  22.        of stress. Methodological differences exist amongst holistic activists.
  23.        Some argue that the scientific methodology essentially defeats the
  24.        purpose of the holistic approach by breaking down realities into
  25.        separate variables. Others argue that alternative treatments can validly
  26.        be tested scientifically. Lack of research funds, argue the activists,
  27.        prevent the testing of those treatments. Both groups, however, perceive
  28.        high-powered scientists as a political impediment to their approach.
  29.        Just as in a political conflict, they use the political process and
  30.        civil disobedience to promote their holistic paradigm. DISCUSSION AND
  31.        CONCLUSIONS: Holistic activists have contributed to the shift of
  32.        research focus from a strictly virological paradigm to a broader
  33.        perspective that takes into account cofactors and focuses on
  34.        strengthening the immune system. They have also been partially credited
  35.        for the creation of the Office of Alternative Medicine at the National
  36.        Institutes of Health. More research efforts are needed to recognize the
  37.        potential benefits of a holistic approach.
